Meru County Roots For Ecotourism With Locals To Boast Revenue

County Government will continue rooting for ecotourism, a sustainable development approach that will enhance utilization of forest resources, for socio-economic growth of the County.

Speaking at Gitoro after a consultative meeting with community based tourism organisations officials from Mt. Kenya Tourism Circuit,
CEC incharge, Maingi Mugambi, said the government is working with Community Forest Associations in the rich plans to maximally exploit county forest resources as a tourism potential. Imenti Forest is one of them targeting Sacred Lake Nkunga, elephants maternity and King Muuru, for enhanced domestic and international tourism.

CO Tourism Titus Murungi, pointed out ecotourism as being one of the major source of revenue from which residents can benefit directly.

Francis Kiogora, Secretary, Nkunga Sacred Lake, hinted the economic potential Nkunga will have to the community once improved.

NMG sign MoU with Meru County to Support MT Kenya Run-in Meru 2020

Meru county government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nation Media Group led by the CEO, Mr. Stephen Gitagama and his colleagues, who will be among the key sponsors on the Mountain Running Championship.

Further, the management of the Credit Bank, led by the CEO Madam Betty Korir met with county officials to explore ways in which they can support Meru County ahead of the coming Mt. Kenya Run – Meru event, whose main focus is to promote tourism and raise funds to set up a Cancer Institute in Meru.

It was discussed, in a separate meeting with Ms. MaryAnne Mwaura, the Public Affairs Head – East Africa and the Citi Bank CEO Mr. Martin Mugambi, ways in which they can partner with Meru County to support subsequent Mt. Kenya Run events as well as the upcoming one.

“We are looking forward to partner with different stakeholders to establish the Meru Cancer Center, which is aimed at providing screening services in order to accord opportunities for early detection as well as treatment.” Said Deputy Governor, Titus Ntuchiu

Meru has, in the recent past, been ranked among the top counties with unusually high numbers of cancer diagnosis made and therefore the funds collected on February 22nd 2020 during the Mt. Kenya Mountain Run, will go towards establishing the cancer Institute, conservation and promoting tourism.

‘NEW YORK TIMES’ LISTING OF MT.KENYA TO BOOST TOURISM

‘New York Times’ listing of Mt Kenya to boost tourism

The New York Times has listed Mount Kenya among the top 52 places to visit in 2020, potentially boosting tourism establishments there.

The US newspaper, notes the mountain will attract more tourists for being one of the world’s last remaining tropical glaciers while its 17,000 feet rocky summit is favourable for hikers.\ Other attractions include grasslands, bamboo forests, heathlands and an Afro-Alpine zone wild landscape.

“A recent assessment found that permanent ice on Mount Kenya could disappear completely before 2030. Now is the time to go,” the New York Times says. The mountain is ranked number 40 behind Caesarea in Egypt (10), Lesotho (12), Egypt (17), Uganda (30) and Ethiopia (49).

Kenya Tourism Federation Chairman Mohammed Hersi said the ranking would boost the tourism sector, which in turn will benefit the hotel industry.
