Leopards

Leopards are astounding strong animals. They are able to climb trees carrying heavy prey and often choose to rest on tree branches during the day. One reason why leopards sometime take their prey up in the trees is to ensure lions or hyenas can’t steal them.

Leopards are known for their agility and can run up to 58km/h and can leap 6 meters horizontally and 3 meters vertically. Amazingly they are strong swimmers.

These beautiful cats are predominantly solitary animals that have large territories. Male territories are larger than of the females but allow intrusion in mating seasons. This animals mark their territories with their urine or claws on trees to warn others to stay away.

Leopards tend to have 2 to 3 cubs per gestation. Mothers refrain from wandering from their territories after giving birth until their young ones are strong enough. The cubs suckle for 3 months and are hidden for the first 8weeks to protect them from predators.

Leopards can live for 12 to17 years. The male leopard can weigh 31kg and the female can weigh from 23 to 27 kg.
