Rhinoceros

There are 5 species of rhino: black, white, Sumatran, Indian and Javan. It is only the white and black rhinos that are found in Africa and Kenya in particular. A group of rhinos is called a crash.

Rhinos have between 24 -34 teeth depending on the species and they do have a great sense of smell and hearing but poor eyesight.

Rhino love wallowing by covering themselves with mud and by letting it dry to protect them from the sun. Rhinos will rub their bodies against tree trucks and rocks to remove ectoparasites such as ticks.

Rhino gestation last between 15 and 16 months, usually giving birth to just one calf [twins are rare occasions]. Young rhinos will remain with their mothers until they are between two to three years old.

Rhinos communicate with each other by smelling the pile of dung, or middens, they leave behind. The middens also delineate a rhino’s territory.

White rhino and Sumatran rhinos are among the almost endangered species .there are only three northern white rhinos left in the world, all living in captivity.

Rhinos can live as long as 40 to 50 years.
